Project Red and Black at B.M.C Durfee High School in Fall River, MA, is an interdisciplinary service-learning program that allows students to become engaged citizens. The students spend time learning about different community organizations and decide how they can help enhance their efforts. Community partners speak to students about problems connected to their non-profit organizations as well as introduce them to possible career paths. SSTAR Prevention has had the pleasure of working with these students to educate them on substance use prevention as well as conduct a needs assessment regarding current social norms and substance use trends among their peers. This data will be used to inform the work that we are doing as we move forward in our strategic planning process for the Massachusetts Collaborative for Action, Leadership, and Learning (MassCALL3) Part B Fall River grant. Having student involvement in our work is a critical component and something that we truly value. This project is an example of some of the work we do within SSTAR Prevention to promote positive youth development and implement program, policy, and practice change to better support youth and their families.
